Troubleshoot openLCA IPC

Connection, search, zero-result, dependency, and Python-environment checks.

Cannot connect to port 8080

  1. Confirm openLCA Desktop is running.
  2. Confirm a database is open.
  3. Start Tools → Developer Tools → IPC Server.
  4. Make sure your Python code uses the same port shown in openLCA.
  5. Check whether another application is already using that port.

Impact results are zero

  • Check provider links.
  • Check product-system construction.
  • Check the reference amount.
  • Check the impact method.
  • Check that the database contains the expected characterization factors.

Python version or dependency problems

bash
python --version
python -m pip show openlca-ipc

The current package declares Python 3.11 or newer. Use python -m pip when several Python installations are present so the installer and interpreter match.

A product flow has no provider

Inspect the flow type first. Elementary flows do not use providers. For product/waste flows, list providers and verify that the active database actually contains an appropriate producing process.

Memory usage grows across repeated calculations

Live calculation results must be disposed. Wrap extraction in try/finally so failures do not leave result objects open.

python
result = client.calculate.simple_calculation(system, method)
try:
    impacts = client.results.get_total_impacts(result)
finally:
    result.dispose()

A calculation is unexpectedly slow

  • Inspect product-system size and process links.
  • Check for unintended/circular model structure.
  • Confirm the correct database/system is active.
  • Do not repeatedly rerun the calculation when result inspection on the existing live result is sufficient.

Report a reproducible issue

  • Minimal code sample.
  • Full traceback.
  • Python/openlca-ipc/olca-ipc/olca-schema versions.
  • openLCA Desktop version.
  • Whether a controlled database reproduces the problem.
