Install openLCA IPC

Install the Python package, start the openLCA IPC server, and verify the connection.

Requirements

  • Python 3.11 or newer
  • openLCA Desktop 2.x
  • A database available in openLCA
bash
python --version

Install from PyPI

bash
pip install openlca-ipc

For optional analysis and export dependencies:

pip install "openlca-ipc[full]"

Install from source

bash
git clone https://github.com/SDAI-institute/openlca-ipc.git
cd openlca-ipc
pip install -e .

Start the openLCA IPC server

  1. Open openLCA Desktop.
  2. Open the database you want to use.
  3. Go to Tools → Developer Tools → IPC Server.
  4. Start the server.
  5. Keep openLCA and the IPC server running while Python is connected.

The common port is 8080.

Test the connection

from openlca_ipc import OLCAClient

with OLCAClient(port=8080) as client:
    print(client.test_connection())

A successful connection means Python can reach openLCA. It does not confirm that the correct database or impact method is selected.
